Business Development Manager (Christchurch)

About the role

The University of Otago’s Research and Enterprise Office in Christchurch is seeking a Business Development Manager to champion the university’s clinical‑trial and translational health research portfolio. Reporting to the R&E team, you will work closely with investigators, health‑system partners and internal support services to position Otago as a preferred destination for industry‑sponsored research.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and develop new opportunities for external research income, focusing on pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical‑device collaborations.
• Lead feasibility assessments, negotiate contracts and manage the full lifecycle of research partnerships.
• Maintain and grow strategic relationships with industry sponsors, health‑system organisations and research partners.
• Collaborate with clinical investigators and internal support teams to prepare proposals and secure funding.
• Promote the university’s research capabilities through networking, events and targeted outreach.

Required profile

• PhD qualification or equivalent research and commercial experience.
• Deep understanding of university research activities, funding models and the clinical‑trial ecosystem.
• Proven track record in business development, negotiation and relationship management within the health‑science sector.
