Project Engineer – Food Processing Capital Project

About the role
We are looking for a dynamic Project Engineer to lead the installation of a new coated fryer and batter system at our Timaru facility. This fixed‑term, full‑time position will drive the planning, execution and handover of a major capital project that will enhance our food manufacturing capabilities.
Key responsibilities
- Lead engineering delivery for the fryer and batter system, ensuring design, commissioning and handover meet quality standards.
- Manage project scope, budget, schedule and risk with a strong focus on food safety and contractor safety.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define requirements and integrate new equipment into production lines.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors, contractors and consultants on design, procurement and installation activities.
- Oversee technical validation, regulatory compliance and maintain accurate project documentation.
- Monitor and report project milestones, costs and risks throughout the lifecycle.
- Support goods receipt forecasting, system commissioning, performance testing and operator training.
- Document lessons learned and promote teamwork, accountability and continuous improvement.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics or a related engineering discipline.
- 3–5 years of experience in FMCG or food manufacturing environments; experience with McCain Foods is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of thermal engineering, oil heating systems and energy‑efficiency principles.
- Understanding of oil management, safety controls and fire protection for hot‑oil systems.
- Experience with process engineering for batter/coating applications and viscosity control.
- Familiarity with hygienic design, CIP cleaning systems and New Zealand food‑safety regulations.
- Ability to integrate factory utilities such as steam, gas, compressed air, chilled water and wastewater.
- Proven track record managing capital equipment installations, especially thermal or coating processes.
- Excellent contractor management, stakeholder engagement and vendor negotiation skills.
- Capability to lead safety‑critical, high‑risk projects within budget.
