Highways Operative

About the role

We are looking for a Highways Operative to join our Wellington team, carrying out general maintenance and operational tasks on the road network. Working alongside a Chargehand, you will perform routine, cyclical and emergency works to keep highways safe and functional.

Key responsibilities

• Perform general maintenance and operational tasks on highways under the guidance of a Chargehand.
• Respond to emergency call‑outs and work on rotas, including out‑of‑hours and winter maintenance duties.
• Assist as a second man or driver’s mate during winter works and other specialised tasks.
• Operate small plant, equipment and mini excavators as required.
• Complete and maintain accurate paper or electronic record sheets.

Required profile

• Minimum 12 months’ experience in highway or construction maintenance.
• Team‑player with flexibility to work varying hours and on‑call duties.
• Willingness to undertake further training and qualifications.
• Ability to take responsibility for plant, equipment and personal safety.
• Interest in obtaining a LGV licence is a plus.
