Driver Operator – Construction Projects

About the role

Downer is seeking a motivated Driver Operator to join its Wellington team. You will support a variety of construction, renewal and maintenance projects across the region, operating heavy‑vehicle equipment and assisting with on‑site tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Operate machinery such as excavators, rollers, graders and trucks on construction sites.
• Reverse, tip and position trucks accurately to meet project requirements.
• Perform manual duties including loading, unloading and ground‑crew support when needed.
• Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections and adhere to road‑safety protocols.
• Collaborate with the project team to ensure timely and safe completion of tasks.

Required profile

• Physically fit and able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Reliable, hardworking and flexible with working hours, including overtime during the summer season.
• Committed to safety and quality standards on site.

Required skills

• Valid Class 4 driver licence (WTR preferred).
• Experience operating excavators, rollers, graders and trucks.
• Proven ability to reverse, tip and position trucks correctly on job sites.
• Good knowledge of road‑safety protocols and pre‑/post‑trip inspections.
