About the role

The Department of Conservation is seeking a Ranger/Project Lead Community to join the Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland Mainland Operations Team. This fixed‑term position will work across Auckland CBD or Warkworth, leading community‑focused conservation initiatives and advocacy campaigns.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage relationships with community groups working on public conservation land and support their success.
  • Plan and deliver advocacy and outreach campaigns to raise awareness of Auckland’s natural environment.
  • Support national programmes such as Tiakina Kauri and Predator Free 2050.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders, including iwi, businesses, and institutions.
  • Mentor colleagues and build capability across the team.
  • Represent DOC in cross‑agency and community engagement initiatives.

Required profile

  • Significant practical community engagement experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Experience planning and delivering medium‑complexity projects on time and within budget.
  • Analytical and critical thinking with clear written communication.
  • Broad understanding of conservation management principles.
  • Well‑developed cultural awareness, particularly of te ao Māori.
  • Tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in conservation, project management or a related field.
  • Current full New Zealand driver licence.

  • Salary range $69,429 – $88,181 NZD per year (depending on skills and experience).
