Commercial Accountant

About the role

Wētā FX is seeking a Commercial Accountant to join its Finance team on a permanent basis. The role blends financial accounting, FP&A and business partnering, with a focus on supporting the Information Technology and Research (IT&R) teams. You will help translate technical financial data into commercial insight that drives investment decisions across the studio.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with IT&R stakeholders to provide financial insight and support decision‑making.
• Prepare, review and advise on business cases for capital investment, especially hardware, software and infrastructure spend.
• Deliver monthly reporting to budget owners, highlighting performance, trends and key risks or opportunities.
• Support budgeting and forecasting processes, turning strategy into actionable financial plans.
• Own accounting responsibilities for software, R&D and non‑current assets, including capex accounting and asset registers.
• Manage R&D accounting and support RDTI claims.
• Assist with month‑end close activities to ensure timely and accurate results.
• Identify and implement improvements to financial processes, reporting and tools.

Required profile

• Approximately five years of experience in financial accounting, FP&A or business partnering.
• CA qualification or equivalent.
• Strong technical accounting knowledge, particularly in fixed assets, leases and cost recognition.
• Ability to apply a commercial lens to financial information and support business decisions.

Required skills

• CA qualification (or equivalent professional accounting credential).
• Technical accounting expertise in fixed assets, lease accounting and cost recognition.
• R&D accounting and familiarity with RDTI claim processes.
