Strategic Planning and Design Team Leader

About the role

Reporting to the Head of Strategy, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of planning, design, transport and open‑space specialists to deliver integrated solutions that support Selwyn District Council’s long‑term vision. This senior leadership position has district‑wide impact and focuses on building capability, inspiring high performance and fostering collaboration.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop a high‑performing multidisciplinary team.
• Guide district and regional spatial planning initiatives.
• Oversee feasibility studies and master‑planning projects that shape future growth.
• Support planning and design outcomes for major infrastructure projects.
• Provide strategic planning and regulatory advice across the organisation.
• Build strong relationships with iwi, communities, stakeholders and partner agencies.
• Champion collaboration, innovation and integrated thinking across Council.

• Significant experience leading people in a complex environment.
• Proven ability to build and develop high‑performing multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong relationship‑building and stakeholder management skills.
