Solicitor – Legal Advisor for Children

About the role

This fast‑paced position provides legal advice and advocacy services to Social Workers and other staff within Oranga Tamariki. The role involves significant courtroom time, representing the Ministry in litigation to achieve positive outcomes for tamariki and their whānau.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and support to Social Workers and other personnel.
• Conduct litigation and represent Oranga Tamariki in court, focusing on family and youth justice matters.
• Collaborate with other lawyers and internal teams to develop case strategies.
• Travel within the region using Oranga Tamariki vehicles as required.

Required profile

• Admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in New Zealand with a current (or eligible) practising certificate.
• Strong desire to ensure tamariki are placed in loving whānau and communities.
• Commitment to honouring treaty obligations to Māori and improving long‑term outcomes.
• Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment where each day’s work matters.
• Willingness to continue personal development in Te Ao Māori and cultural competence.
• Clean driver’s licence for regional travel.

Required skills

• Sound understanding of family law or criminal (youth justice) law, or a genuine interest in developing expertise in these areas.
• Excellent communication, digital and written skills.
• Honesty, transparency and a collaborative team mindset.
