Legal Member – Building Practitioners Board

About the role

The Building Practitioners Board is seeking a qualified legal professional to serve as a Legal Member. This appointment supports the Board’s mandate to oversee the Licensed Building Practitioners Scheme and ensure high standards in New Zealand’s building and construction sector.

Key responsibilities

• Approve rules for Licensed Building Practitioners in accordance with Part 4 of the Building Act 2004.
• Hear and decide complaints, conduct inquiries, and discipline Licensed Building Practitioners under the Act.
• Hear appeals against decisions made by the Registrar of the Board.
• Review and report on the Board’s performance, functions, and powers to the Minister.
• Contribute to the Board’s independent, tribunal‑like decision‑making processes.

Required profile

• Qualified barrister or solicitor.
• Expertise in one or more of the following areas: contract law, building and construction legislation, or consumer protection law.
• Genuine interest in supporting effective regulation of licensed building practitioners.
• Ideally, experience with the building industry, tribunal or dispute resolution, and collegial decision‑making environments.

Required skills

• Legal analysis and interpretation of legislation.
• Understanding of building industry regulations and standards.
• Ability to assess and adjudicate complaints and appeals.
