About the role
The Senior Technician – Workshop Engineer provides technical and workshop support for the School of Veterinary Sciences on the Manawatu campus. You will ensure the reliable operation of teaching, research, project and clinical equipment, supporting the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and related facilities.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain and manage a wide range of specialised medical, surgical, diagnostic, teaching and research equipment.
- Perform servicing, repairs and preventative maintenance to keep equipment safe, reliable and compliant.
- Maintain equipment registers, coordinate servicing schedules and liaise with approved suppliers and contractors.
- Assist with procurement, installation and commissioning of new equipment, ensuring specifications and compliance standards are met.
- Design, develop and assemble bespoke teaching and research equipment in collaboration with workshop teams.
- Support the Clinical Skills Laboratory with teaching models and technical solutions.
- Provide staff training on safe equipment use and maintain standard operating procedures.
- Ensure health, safety and regulatory compliance and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Required profile
- NZ Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) Level 4 in Fitting and Machining, General Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
- Extensive practical engineering experience in a workshop environment, preferably in a senior or highly responsible role.
- Experience maintaining and repairing scientific or medical equipment is highly valued.
- Proactive problem‑solver who works well independently and as part of a team, with a strong focus on safety, quality and compliance.
- Desirable (but not essential): Current First Aid Certificate, forklift operator’s licence, Heavy Goods Vehicle licence, Electrical Appliance Serviceperson registration.
