Senior Legal Counsel – Litigation

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Legal Counsel – Litigation to support the NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi) safety camera programme on a fixed‑term basis. The role will cover parental leave from early August 2024 to late March 2027 and can be based in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal leadership for all aspects of the NZTA safety camera system.
• Advise on enforcement matters and ensure regulatory compliance across the programme.
• Manage and oversee prosecutions and related litigation, coordinating with Crown Prosecutors.
• Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders and external law firms.
• Ensure compliance with privacy, official information, disclosure and other statutory requirements.
• Support the development and implementation of enforcement policies and operational guidelines.

Required profile

• At least 5 years post‑qualification experience in litigation, preferably criminal or regulatory prosecutions.
• Experience working for a government department, agency, or regional council.
• Proven ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously and deliver pragmatic advice.
• Strong communication and relationship‑building skills with diverse stakeholders.
• Strategic thinker able to propose innovative solutions.
• Availability for the fixed‑term period covering parental leave.
