New Zealand Payroll SME/Consultant

About the role

We are seeking a New Zealand‑based Payroll Subject Matter Expert to join a 6‑month remote assignment. The contractor will work 20‑30 hours per week (3‑4 days) and bridge the gap between Product and Engineering, ensuring that payroll solutions are compliant and functional in practice. This is a strategic consultancy role rather than day‑to‑day payroll operations.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the in‑country payroll authority for product development and engineering teams.
• Validate that new payroll features meet New Zealand regulatory requirements and practical implementation standards.
• Provide guidance on payroll design, data flows, compliance testing, and risk mitigation.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional stakeholders to translate business needs into technical specifications and user stories.
• Support the team with ad‑hoc payroll queries and ensure documentation reflects local compliance.

Required profile

• Based in New Zealand and able to work remotely.
• Proven experience as a payroll specialist or consultant within New Zealand.
• Comfortable working on a freelance or interim basis for a fixed‑term contract.
• Strong understanding of New Zealand payroll legislation and best practices.
