Shepherd General – Mt Hamilton Farm

About the role

Join the energetic team at Mt Hamilton Farm as a Shepherd General. You will work closely with the farm manager, gaining hands‑on experience in livestock care, seasonal feeding, and general farm operations on a 1,800‑ha property in Southland, New Zealand.

Key responsibilities

• Manage livestock, including hinds, Angus cows and lambs.
• Assist with winter feeding programmes and seasonal lamb finishing.
• Perform basic tractor work (training provided) and general farm maintenance.
• Maintain fences and infrastructure across flat, rolling and tussock hill country.
• Keep accurate records of stock movements and farm activities.

Required profile

• Passionate about farming and animal welfare.
• Organised, reliable and self‑motivated.
• Good communicator who works well in a small team.
• Proactive about health, safety and farm asset care.
• Valid restricted or full driver licence.

Required skills

• Livestock management.
• Tractor operation (training provided).
• Record‑keeping and use of farm technology.
• Driving with a valid licence.
