Senior Legal Counsel – 12‑Month Fixed Term

About the role

ASB is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel on a 12‑month fixed‑term basis to join its Banking Legal Team. Based at the waterfront head office in Auckland, the role offers flexible work‑from‑home options and the chance to support retail and business banking operations.

Key responsibilities

• Provide timely, sound legal advice to retail and business banking teams on product, lending, digital initiatives and regulatory compliance.
• Manage legal issues across banking and finance, financial services regulation, financial crime, and commercial litigation.
• Liaise with external counsel and other advisers as required.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders.

Required profile

• 10+ years of relevant private‑practice or in‑house experience, preferably with exposure to the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003 and/or the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013.
• Ability to work autonomously in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.
• Strong lateral thinking and relationship‑building skills with senior leadership and project teams.
• Eligible to hold a practising certificate as a lawyer in New Zealand.
