Legal Team Manager (PAL2) – Criminal Defence

About the role

The Public Defence Service is seeking an experienced criminal litigator with people‑management experience to lead a small legal team at its North Shore office in Albany. This role combines high‑quality defence work with the opportunity to mentor junior lawyers and contribute to the delivery of public justice.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver high‑quality defence representation to legally aided clients.
• Manage a varied caseload of criminal matters, including high‑profile cases.
• Appear in the High Court and Court of Appeal as required.
• Mentor, supervise and develop junior lawyers within the team.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with a PAL2 listing and the right to practice in New Zealand.
• Demonstrated credibility with judges, peers and the wider legal community.
• Strong commitment to criminal justice and public defence.
• Ability to work collaboratively and support a small team of lawyers.
• Empathy and capacity to relate to a diverse range of clients.

Required skills

• Criminal litigation experience, including appearances in higher courts.
• People‑management and mentoring experience.
