Experienced Civil Litigation Lawyer – Clear Partnership Pathway

About the role

AWS Legal is seeking an experienced civil litigation lawyer to lead and grow its Civil Litigation practice across Southland and Central Otago. This is a step‑up position created to succeed a retiring senior litigator, offering genuine leadership responsibilities and a transparent pathway to partnership.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and expand the Civil Litigation practice, managing a high‑quality, complex caseload.
• Conduct court appearances, handle disputes and oversee alternative dispute resolution matters.
• Provide pragmatic, commercially‑sound advice as a trusted advisor to clients.
• Mentor and develop junior lawyers and support staff, ensuring professional standards.
• Contribute to the firm’s strategic direction and succession planning.

Required profile

• NZ law qualification with a current practising certificate.
• Senior Associate‑level experience in civil litigation.
• Confidence in client interaction and handling complex matters.
• Commercial, pragmatic approach with a genuine interest in leadership.
• Ambition to progress to partnership in the medium term.
