Drainage Engineer – Transport

About the role

SMEC is seeking an experienced Drainage Engineer to lead the delivery of drainage solutions for transport infrastructure projects across New Zealand. This position offers the chance to work on high‑profile, nationally significant projects while contributing to the growth of SMEC’s local capability.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake drainage design and technical delivery for transport infrastructure projects from concept through to detailed design.
• Interpret flood modelling results, coordinate with related disciplines, and develop practical, integrated drainage solutions.
• Ensure designs comply with New Zealand and regional standards and reflect local cultural, planning, and client expectations.
• Prepare technical reports, written advice, and proposals to support project delivery and business development.
• Support business development activities and help shape resilient, practical drainage outcomes for major infrastructure projects.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a Drainage Engineer, preferably on transport projects.
• Strong technical capability and client‑focused mindset.
• Ability to deliver high‑quality integrated hard and soft engineering drainage solutions.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Familiarity with New Zealand drainage standards and regulations.
