Yard Operator / General Hand

About the role

We are looking for a practical, hands‑on Yard Operator / General Hand to support daily operations at our Napier metal‑recycling yard. Reporting to the Yard Manager, you will safely operate machinery, sort and grade metals, and provide excellent service to customers.

Key responsibilities

• Grade, sort and purchase various non‑ferrous metals.
• Load and unload trucks, bins and trailers.
• Operate forklifts and other heavy equipment to move material.
• Weigh, briquette, bag and palletise material for transfer and stock‑take.
• Assist customers with enquiries and ensure high service standards.
• Follow occupational health and safety policies and procedures.

Required profile

• Strong attention to detail when identifying and separating metal types.
• Can‑do attitude with willingness to undertake training.
• Good written and verbal communication, numeracy and basic computer skills.
• Previous experience in customer service or a similar hands‑on role.

Required skills

• Forklift operation (forklift ticket preferred).
• Heavy machinery operation.
• Basic computer literacy.
