Trainee – Patient Services (Casual) – Auckland

About the role

Our Patient Services Department is looking for a dedicated Trainee to work on a casual basis across several Auckland collection centres (Otahuhu, Botany, Howick, Pakuranga, Mount Wellington). The role provides hands‑on experience in blood and specimen collection, customer interaction and laboratory logistics, offering a pathway to become a Qualified Medical Laboratory Pre‑Analytical Technician.

Key responsibilities

• Collect blood samples and other specimens (faeces, urine, tissue) from patients.
• Handle, label and prepare specimens for safe transportation to the laboratory.
• Deliver professional customer service and act as a liaison between health professionals, patients and the lab.
• Maintain accurate records and follow all safety and confidentiality procedures.

Required profile

• Positive, friendly attitude with cultural and social sensitivity.
• Compassionate approach to caring for patients of all ages.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow processes under pressure.
• Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
• Registration with the Medical Science Council and an Annual Practising Certificate are desirable but not mandatory.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy (blood collection).
• Specimen handling and preparation.
• Basic computer literacy.
