Sustainability Consultant (ESD Engineer) – Buildings

About the role

22 Degrees is seeking a Senior or Intermediate ESD Consultant to lead sustainable building projects from concept through to practical completion. You will represent the firm at client meetings, drive innovative sustainable methodologies, and collaborate closely with our building services teams.

Key responsibilities

• Manage whole‑life design of building projects from concept to completion.
• Represent 22 Degrees at client and stakeholder meetings.
• Develop and implement new sustainable design benchmarks.
• Work with building services teams to deliver the ESD agenda.
• Support interdisciplinary project teams to achieve high‑quality outcomes.
• Lead development of the dedicated ESD team and wider staff undertaking ESD work.
• Act as a GSAP on multiple projects, focusing on outcomes rather than points.

Required profile

• Strong relationship‑building skills with internal and external partners.
• Commitment to sustainable design in its broadest sense.
• Ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
• Highly organised with excellent planning and project‑management abilities.
• Confident interpersonal and communication capabilities.
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Building Science, Architecture or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 4+ years experience in sustainable buildings, ESD engineering, LCA, construction or building services.

Required skills

• Experience conducting carbon and life‑cycle assessments under ISO or NZGBC standards.
• Proficiency with modelling software such as Design Builder or IES.
• Green Star Accredited Professional (or working towards).
• Life Cycle Assessment Certified Practitioner (LCACP) – certified or in progress.
• Homestar Assessor/Designer certification (desirable).
• NABERSNZ Accredited Assessor status (desirable).
• Basic understanding of LCA and embodied carbon.
