Strategic Policy Advisor

About the role

The Rotorua Lakes Council is looking for a Strategic Policy Advisor to join its Governance, Strategy and Compliance team. You will provide high‑level policy advice that supports the Council’s long‑term strategic objectives and ensures compliance with relevant legislation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, review and advise on policy frameworks that align with the Council’s strategic plan.
• Analyse legislative changes and assess their impact on local government operations.
• Collaborate with senior leaders to integrate policy recommendations into decision‑making processes.
• Prepare briefing notes, reports and presentations for Council meetings and public consultations.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented policies and recommend improvements.

Required profile

• Proven experience in policy development within a public sector or local government environment.
• Strong analytical and research skills with the ability to interpret complex legislation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, capable of presenting to senior stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
