Sterile Services Technician

About the role

The Sterile Services Technician role at Mercy Hospital Dunedin is a permanent, full‑time position focused on the safe cleaning, sterilisation and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment. The role operates on a rotating Monday‑Saturday roster and offers on‑the‑job training, including the opportunity to obtain a certificate in sterilising technology.

Key responsibilities

• Clean, sterilise and repack medical instruments and equipment following hospital policies and infection‑control standards.
• Operate washers, autoclaves, Steris machines and low‑temperature hydrogen peroxide sterilisation units.
• Inspect and verify that instrument kits are complete, correctly assembled and ready for theatre use.
• Perform checks on loan equipment kits to ensure timely processing.
• Maintain accurate records of sterilisation cycles and equipment maintenance.

Required profile

• High attention to detail and ability to work with small, precise tasks.
• Willingness to undertake or already hold an NZSSA qualification in sterile services.
• Team‑player with strong communication skills.
• Enthusiastic, proactive and flexible attitude.
• Vaccination history must be provided for employment.

Required skills

• Operation of washers and autoclaves.
• Use of Steris sterilisation machines.
• Low‑temperature hydrogen peroxide sterilisation techniques.
• Microscope operation for detailed instrument inspection.
