About the role

Te Puni Kōkiri's Legal Services team is looking for a Poutoko Ture (solicitor) to join a team of eight based in Te Tari Matua, Pōneke, Wellington. The role works alongside the Manager, Legal Services and the team to give timely, high-quality and robust legal advice to the Minister and across the organisation. It suits a recent law graduate keen to learn and grow.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on ministerial powers and responsibilities and constitutional conventions
• Advise on legislative compliance, Treaty settlements and Māori Crown relationships
• Review legislation impacting Māori
• Draft contracts and other legal documentation
• Take part in law reform, policy and programme initiatives
• Advise on the Privacy Act 2020, the Official Information Act 1982 and other statutory compliance matters
• Assist with the administration of Māori Trust Boards and other legislation administered by Te Puni Kōkiri

Required profile

• A law degree and eligibility to hold a practicing certificate
• Understanding of the legal implications of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
• Understanding of the role of Te Puni Kōkiri and significant issues in Māori affairs
• Comfortable in situations where tikanga is observed

• High standards of analytical, written and oral communication
• Ability to provide accurate and relevant legal advice
