Solicitor – Legal Advice & Advocacy for Children

About the role

This fixed‑term position (until May 2027) is based in Hamilton and provides legal advice and advocacy for Oranga Tamariki’s social workers and other staff. You will spend significant time in court representing the Ministry, with the primary aim of achieving positive outcomes for tamariki and their whānau.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct litigation and represent Oranga Tamariki in court proceedings.
• Provide legal advice to social workers and collaborate with other lawyers.
• Develop and review legal strategies to protect the best interests of children and young people.
• Maintain strong internal and external relationships to support case work.
• Travel within the region using Ministry vehicles as required.

Required profile

• Admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in New Zealand with a current (or eligible) practising certificate.
• Demonstrated commitment to the welfare of tamariki and to honouring Treaty obligations.
• Understanding of family law or youth‑justice/criminal law, or a strong interest in developing expertise in these areas.
• Excellent communication, written and digital skills.
• Honest, transparent, collaborative team player.
• Clean driver’s licence for regional travel.
