Senior Solicitor – Fixed Term (12 months)

About the role

MBIE is seeking an enthusiastic Senior Solicitor to join its Corporate and Registries team on a 12‑month fixed‑term basis. The role offers the chance to work across a wide range of regulatory systems and to influence New Zealand’s future economic landscape through legal advice on climate change, sustainability, and the future of work.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality legal advice to MBIE’s operations on governance, integrity and conduct matters.
• Advise on legislative reforms in areas such as building, employment, health & safety, and occupational regulation.
• Support projects related to privacy, official information, information sharing, and emerging sectors like space weather.
• Collaborate with other in‑house counsel to deliver timely and technically proficient advice.
• Develop expertise across multiple regulatory systems based on experience and interest.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with a practising certificate and at least 5 years post‑qualification experience.
• Demonstrated experience in public law and an understanding of government mechanisms.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to tailor messages to diverse audiences.
• Proven ability to achieve successful outcomes in demanding environments.
• Excellent relationship‑building and collaborative skills.
