Senior Software Engineer - Android

About the role

Westpac New Zealand is looking for a Senior Software Engineer specializing in Android to join its Payments Technology team. You will help create simple, safe, and seamless banking experiences by delivering end‑to‑end mobile solutions in a fast‑moving environment.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain Android applications that deliver meaningful customer experiences.
• Collaborate with architecture and the wider Payments team to implement architectural changes while releasing new features.
• Contribute to technical design and architecture decisions and support teammates.
• Work closely with product, platform and engineering partners to deliver end‑to‑end solutions.
• Share knowledge, mentor others and help grow team capability.
• Improve engineering practices around performance, security and reliability.
• Identify opportunities to enhance systems, processes and delivery approaches.

Required profile

• 7+ years of mobile application development experience, primarily Android using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
• Strong collaboration skills across multiple teams and initiatives.
• Proven ability to build scalable, complex mobile systems and understand mobile architecture.
• Solid testing, debugging and quality‑engineering experience, including mobile automation tools.
• Experience with DevOps tools such as Fastlane, Gradle, Jenkins and cloud‑based CI/CD platforms.
• Good understanding of Material Design guidelines and accessibility principles.
• Ability to balance ideal engineering outcomes with business constraints.
• Experience integrating AI responsibly into engineering workflows and coaching others.
