Senior Rural Generalist Medical Officer

About the role

The Rural Generalist Team on the West Coast of New Zealand is seeking a Senior Medical Officer to deliver high‑quality, comprehensive health services across a broad clinical scope. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment serving a dispersed population of about 32,500 people.

Key responsibilities

• Provide primary, urgent, and emergency care to the community.
• Deliver general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and obstetrics/gynaecology services.
• Collaborate with in‑house specialists (psychiatry, anaesthetics, surgery) and external partners for tertiary transfers.
• Support community health initiatives and rural health education.
• Participate in on‑call rotas and out‑of‑hours coverage.

Required profile

• Vocational registration (e.g., FDRHMNZ or FRNZCGP) and eligibility for registration with the New Zealand Medical Council.
• Interest in pursuing or holding dual fellowship qualifications.
• Experience as a Senior Medical Officer, fellow, or trainee in a rural or generalist setting.
• Commitment to delivering equitable care in a remote environment.

Required skills

• Clinical competence in primary care, emergency medicine, general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and obstetrics/gynaecology.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
