Senior Power Systems Engineer

About the role

ABB is seeking a Senior Power Systems Engineer to lead development and testing of its critical power product portfolio, including UPS, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Active Voltage Conditioners and Static Frequency Converters. The role is based onsite in Napier, New Zealand and reports to the Chapter Lead (ELSP Pilot).

Key responsibilities

• Conduct functional, performance and safety testing on UPS, BESS, AVC and SFC systems to meet IEC/UL standards.
• Design, analyse and validate low‑ and medium‑voltage power‑conditioning and energy‑management systems, including protection schemes and power‑quality optimisation.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation such as test procedures, commissioning guides, user manuals and as‑built drawings.
• Plan and execute system commissioning activities on customer sites, handling pre‑commissioning inspections, power‑up sequences and performance optimisation.
• Troubleshoot electrical faults, power‑quality issues and system performance problems, providing improvement strategies and technical guidance.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of experience designing or maintaining power‑electronic systems, with proven project‑leadership ability.
• Strong understanding of three‑phase systems, grid‑connected power electronics and energy‑storage applications.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Electronics; postgraduate qualifications are a plus.
• Excellent English communication skills and ability to collaborate across multi‑site engineering teams.

Required skills

• Proficiency with AutoCAD for electrical schematics.
• Experience using circuit‑simulation tools such as PSCAD and Matlab/Simulink.
• Knowledge of IEC/UL certification processes for power equipment.
