Senior Legal Counsel - Construction Specialist

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Legal Counsel with a construction focus to join Auckland Airport’s in‑house legal team on a three‑year fixed‑term basis. The role will provide pragmatic legal advice across the full lifecycle of major airport infrastructure projects, working closely with project delivery, procurement, commercial and operational stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic and contractual advice on precinct‑wide infrastructure plans and large‑scale construction projects.
• Advise on procurement, contract negotiation, variations, claims management and dispute avoidance.
• Draft, review and maintain the company’s standard contract templates and precedent documents.
• Oversee execution of contracts and agreements in line with company policy.
• Manage relationships with external legal counsel and coordinate outsourced matters.
• Support engagement with external parties such as airlines, government agencies, contractors and third‑party operators on airport land.

Required profile

• Admitted barrister and solicitor in New Zealand with a current practising certificate.
• LLB degree.
• 10+ years of experience in construction law, either in a leading private practice or in‑house legal team.
• Proven ability to balance legal risk with commercial outcomes in complex project environments.
• Strong relationship‑building and negotiation skills at all organisational levels.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of construction contracts and related legislation.
• Experience with contract drafting, review and execution.
• Expertise in claims management and dispute resolution.
