Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Psychological Medicine & Consultant Psychiatrist

About the role

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Otago, in partnership with Health New Zealand – Southern, seeks a joint academic and clinical leader in Psychological Medicine. This full‑time position combines a 0.5 FTE senior lecturing or associate professorship with a 0.5 FTE consultant psychiatrist role, offering a unique platform to influence teaching, research, and patient care across the Otago and Southland regions.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in psychological medicine and related subjects.
• Develop and lead research programmes, collaborating with departments such as Anatomy, Pathology and Public Health.
• Provide clinical services in inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, participating in shared and on‑call rosters.
• Support outpatient psychiatry clinics and contribute to service development.
• Mentor students and junior staff, fostering a supportive academic environment.

Required profile

• Specialist qualification in Psychiatry and eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
• Proven experience in higher‑education teaching and scholarly research.
• Strong academic record with potential for promotion to senior lecturer or associate professor.
• Ability to balance clinical duties with academic responsibilities.
