About the role

MBIE is seeking a Senior Investigating Solicitor to join its Business Registries Operational Legal Services team in Auckland. This permanent position offers a high‑impact legal career supporting the integrity of New Zealand’s business environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical, legal and administrative advice to the Insolvency and Trustee Service (ITS) on estate matters.
• Represent the Official Assignee in court proceedings.
• Offer legal guidance on issues affecting Business Registries operations.
• Collaborate with government agencies, suppliers and other stakeholders to achieve organisational goals.
• Analyse complex legal challenges, develop compliant solutions and draft clear legal opinions.
• Build and maintain trusted relationships with internal and external parties.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in law and admission as a Barrister and Solicitor with a current practising certificate.
• Minimum three years post‑admission experience.
• Strong ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation.
• Well‑developed analytical, problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.
• Courtroom experience preferred.
• Excellent written communication and the ability to influence stakeholders.
• Legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
