Senior Internal Auditor

About the role

The Senior Internal Auditor will join the Principal Audit team of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) to provide independent, meaningful, and insightful assurance services across the organisation. Working with two other senior auditors and co‑source partners, you will help shape a strategically relevant audit plan and deliver risk‑focused insights to senior stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver the in‑year Internal Audit plan.
• Lead a high‑performing team of internal auditors, fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
• Drive change in a fast‑paced audit environment and support fraud investigations when required.
• Identify opportunities for improvement beyond compliance and provide actionable recommendations.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with military and civilian personnel throughout NZDF.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification (Bachelor) in Commerce, Accounting, Business, Finance or Law.
• Senior‑level internal audit experience with a proven record of leading audit engagements.
• Strong project management, analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to draw conclusions from complex data.
• Highly developed communication skills and stakeholder management experience.

Required skills

• Knowledge of Global Internal Audit Standards.
• Understanding of contemporary risk‑management frameworks.
