Senior Full Stack Engineer – Payments Technology

About the role

Westpac New Zealand’s Payments Technology team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help create simple, safe and seamless banking experiences. You will work on new mobile and web payment solutions while navigating ongoing architectural change in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain mobile applications that deliver meaningful customer experiences.
• Collaborate with architecture and the wider Payments team to implement architectural changes and deliver new features.
• Contribute to technical design and architecture decisions and support teammates.
• Work closely with product, platform and engineering partners to deliver end‑to‑end solutions.
• Share knowledge, mentor others and help grow team capability.
• Improve engineering practices around performance, security and reliability.
• Identify opportunities to enhance systems, processes and delivery approaches.

Required profile

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with strong full‑stack development background, preferably using Java.
• Proven ability to design and build scalable, maintainable applications across front‑end and back‑end.
• Experience working in complex environments with multiple parallel initiatives.
• Strong testing, debugging and quality‑engineering practices.
• Hands‑on experience with CI/CD and DevOps, modern delivery pipelines and cloud platforms.
• Excellent problem‑solving, communication and collaboration skills with a customer‑focused mindset.
• Ability to integrate AI responsibly into engineering workflows and coach others on its use.
