Senior Counsel – Legal Advisor for Institutional Business

About the role

ANZ is seeking a Senior Counsel to join its Legal team and provide high‑quality, commercially pragmatic advice to the Institutional and broader business units across New Zealand. Working in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment, you will partner with business, risk and product teams to manage legal risk, strengthen governance and enable confident decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver legal services to ANZ Institutional and wider business units, leveraging internal and external resources.
• Provide clear, concise, cost‑effective legal advice that aligns with commercial objectives.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners.
• Offer expert corporate governance guidance to mitigate risk and support strategic decisions.
• Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, contribute to risk forums and drive process improvements.
• Collaborate on joint projects across the ANZ legal team that impact the organisation as a whole.

Required profile

• Proven experience in banking and financial services law.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to translate complex legal issues into plain language.
• Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Strong understanding of legal risk, governance and the balance between regulation and business goals.
• Proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement.
• Highly organised, able to work at pace and engage senior stakeholders confidently.
• Capability to develop procedures and deliver training on legal matters.
