Rural Generalist – Senior Medical Officer

About the role

The West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island is seeking an experienced Senior Medical Officer to join its Rural Generalist Team. You will deliver high‑quality, equitable health care across a broad clinical scope in a beautiful, remote environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide primary, urgent, and emergency care to the coastal community.
• Manage general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and obstetrics/gynaecology cases.
• Collaborate with in‑house specialists and external partners for comprehensive patient management.
• Support the Rural Generalist model by delivering hospital‑based and community services.
• Contribute to the multidisciplinary team’s continuous learning and quality improvement.

Required profile

• Vocational registration (e.g., FDRHMNZ or FRNZCGP) and eligibility for NZ Medical Council registration.
• Interest in pursuing or holding dual fellowship qualifications.
• Demonstrated experience in rural or generalist medicine at a senior level.
• Commitment to serving a small, isolated population.

Required skills

• Broad clinical competence across primary care, emergency medicine, general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and obstetrics/gynaecology.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in remote settings.
