Rural Generalist – Senior Medical Officer

About the role

The West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island is seeking a dedicated Rural Generalist to join the Senior Medical Officer team. You will provide comprehensive, high‑quality health services across a broad clinical scope for a dispersed population of about 32,500 residents.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver primary, urgent, and emergency care in rural hospital and community settings.
• Manage general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and obstetrics/gynaecology cases.
• Collaborate with in‑house specialists and regional ‘TransAlpine’ partners for tertiary support.
• Contribute to a flexible, multidisciplinary team that supports equitable health outcomes.
• Participate in community health initiatives and rural health education.

Required profile

• Vocational registration (e.g., FDRHMNZ or FRNZCGP) with a commitment to dual fellowship or pathway toward it.
• Eligibility to obtain registration with the New Zealand Medical Council.
• Experience as a Senior Medical Officer, fellow, or trainee in a rural or generalist setting.
• Strong interest in rural health and community‑focused care.
