Research Technician – Conservation (Fixed‑Term)

About the role
This full‑time, fixed‑term position (21 Sept 2026 – 15 Jan 2027) supports critical conservation work on Rakiura (Stewart Island). You will join a field‑based team researching the Critically Endangered Pukunui (Southern New Zealand Dotterel) during its breeding season.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct extensive field surveys across remote, sub‑alpine habitats.
- Monitor birds and nests, including setting up and maintaining nest cameras.
- Collect, manage, and enter field data accurately.
- Summarise findings and prepare reports for stakeholders.
- Organise and lead field trips, working on a 10‑days‑on/4‑days‑off roster.
Required profile
- Strong back‑country experience with off‑track navigation.
- Ability to work independently in exposed, remote locations.
- Good physical fitness and capacity to carry a heavy pack.
- Experience leading projects or teams.
- Relevant tertiary qualification is desirable.
Required skills
- GIS mapping.
