Research Assistant – Conservation (Fixed‑Term)

About the role

This is a hands‑on conservation position on Rakiura (Stewart Island) focused on researching the Critically Endangered Pukunui (Southern New Zealand Dotterel). The role runs full‑time from 21 September 2026 to 15 January 2027 and involves extensive field work during the breeding season.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct extensive field surveys across remote sub‑alpine locations.
• Monitor birds and nests, including setting up and maintaining nest cameras.
• Collect, manage and enter ecological data accurately.
• Work on a 10‑days‑on, 4‑days‑off roster, staying in small huts or campsites while on duty.

Required profile

• Strong back‑country experience with off‑track navigation skills.
• Proven ability to work independently in remote, exposed environments.
• Experience in bird monitoring and data collection.
• Good physical fitness and capacity to carry a heavy pack.
• Easy‑going attitude with solid interpersonal skills.
• Desirable: relevant training or qualification and experience with bird handling/banding.
