Regional Legal Manager

About the role

This senior legal leadership position is based in Wellington and provides national reach across Oranga Tamariki. You will influence legal practice, support outcomes for children, youth and families, and work within a well‑supported, high‑functioning Legal Services team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, manage and develop a team of lawyers covering Wellington and the Upper South Island, fostering a high‑performing culture.
• Ensure delivery of high‑quality legal advice and advocacy throughout the region.
• Collaborate with other Regional Legal Managers and people leaders to maintain national consistency and shared purpose.
• Oversee risk and resource management through clear systems, sound judgement and practical leadership.
• Build trust‑based relationships with the judiciary, external counsel, social work staff, regional management and other stakeholders.
• Drive and spearhead projects of nationwide impact.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading, developing and coaching legal professionals in a high‑performing environment.
• Background in litigation and/or family law with solid familiarity with the justice system and government mechanisms.
• Demonstrated ability to build team morale, support others and contribute to a collaborative culture.
• Comfort working under pressure while remaining practical, calm and solutions‑focused.
• Strong commitment to the vision and values of Oranga Tamariki and to developing cultural capability.
