Quarantine Officer & Detector Dog Handler (Permanent)

About the role

Our Quarantine Officers and Detector Dog Handlers protect New Zealand’s biosecurity by ensuring cargo, mail and passengers entering the country are free of pest and disease risks. Officers work on a rotating roster across international airports, ports, mail centres and cargo facilities, while Dog Handlers partner with specially trained dogs to detect prohibited items.

Key responsibilities

• Inspect cargo, mail and passenger baggage for biosecurity threats.
• Operate at airports, seaports, mail centres and other entry points on a roster that includes nights, weekends and public holidays.
• Work with a detection dog to locate high‑risk products and report findings.
• Maintain accurate records and communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
• Participate in ongoing training and development programmes.

Required profile

• Strong passion for protecting New Zealand’s environment and primary industries.
• Self‑motivated, physically fit and able to stand or move for long periods.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Full New Zealand driver’s licence.
• Interest or qualification in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, botany or environmental science.
• For Dog Handler applicants: knowledge of canine care and safety, and ability to pass agility and fitness tests.

• High level of computer literacy.
