Project Manager Infrastructure

About the role

The Department of Conservation (DOC) is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of infrastructure projects that support conservation across New Zealand. You will be responsible for planning, executing and completing a diverse portfolio of assets, from offices and visitor centres to tracks, huts, bridges and roading, ensuring they meet strategic objectives and high‑quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Define project scope, milestones and deliverables for a range of infrastructure initiatives.
• Develop and maintain detailed project plans, schedules and budgets.
• Identify, assess and manage risks, dependencies and issues throughout the project lifecycle.
• Lead communication with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment and transparency.
• Coordinate with work‑stream leads, contractors and partners to achieve timely, on‑budget outcomes.
• Motivate and support the project team, fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment.
• Seek opportunities for sustainable, small‑scale improvements that align with broader programme goals.

Required profile

• Minimum 3 years of proven project management experience, preferably in infrastructure or construction.
• Strong ability to navigate ambiguity, manage risk and make decisions under pressure.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• Growth mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and learning.
• Willingness to work flexibly across different locations throughout New Zealand.
