Principal Transport Engineer

About the role

As the Principal Transport Engineer you will lead the strategic transport programme that supports Hamilton’s urban growth. Reporting to the People Manager, Strategy and Planning Specialists and taking technical direction from the Technical Director Transport, you will provide expert advice to deliver an efficient, safe and future‑ready transport network for Hamilton City.

Key responsibilities

• Lead strategic network planning and implementation of urban growth transport infrastructure projects.
• Manage the development of Hamilton’s Transport Master Plan and the Access Hamilton Strategy, ensuring alignment with the wider sub‑region.
• Provide technical advice on capital transport project delivery and guide projects to achieve strategic outcomes.
• Contribute to the 10‑year plan and 30‑year infrastructure strategy, including transport growth programmes.
• Act as client representative for the Waikato Regional Transport Model (WRTM) and Hamilton Transport Model (HTM), ensuring modelling supports planning decisions.
• Support Development Engineers in engaging with the development community and assist with policy and by‑law reviews.
• Represent Council in key forums such as Fast Track, Future Proof and Transportation Waikato.
• Mentor and develop staff across the transport team.

Required profile

• Senior technical leader with a strong strategic focus on transport planning and delivery.
• Proven ability to interpret transport strategies, modelling outputs and investment priorities.
• Experience influencing senior stakeholders and delivering large‑scale transport solutions.
• Excellent communication and mentoring skills.
