Policy Advisor – Science System

About the role

MBIE is seeking two Policy Advisors to join the Science System Policy team within the Science Branch. You will help shape New Zealand’s science, innovation and technology system through strategic reforms that support economic growth, redesign the science funding model and enhance public‑good science delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and analyse policy options for the science system reform programme.
• Provide evidence‑based advice on funding, institutions, workforce, infrastructure and system performance.
• Collaborate with the Science Sector Policy team, other MBIE portfolios, public research organisations, businesses, investors and universities.
• Contribute to the development of the Science Investment Plan and related strategic documents.

Required profile

• Experience in public policy or a related field.
• Knowledge of policy development processes and ability to apply them to complex issues.
• Strong analytical thinking, problem‑solving and trade‑off assessment skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.
• Positive, can‑do attitude with ability to manage workload and changing priorities.
• Legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
