Mobile Fleet Engineer

About the role

The Mobile Fleet Engineer provides frontline technical support for Auckland's passenger rail network, ensuring trains remain available, reliable, and safe. Working across key locations, you will diagnose faults, carry out rapid repairs, and support return‑to‑service decisions to minimise operational impact.

Key responsibilities

• Provide real‑time technical support and fault triage from the Fleet Control Centre.
• Diagnose and rectify rolling‑stock faults throughout the network.
• Coordinate deployment of field technicians and prioritise fault response.
• Perform rapid troubleshooting, temporary or permanent repairs.
• Support incident response and return‑to‑service activities.
• Contribute to reliability improvements and continuous‑improvement initiatives.
• Offer technical guidance, mentoring, and support to team members.
• Ensure all work complies with safety, OEM, and Auckland One Rail requirements.

Required profile

• Trade qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
• Proven experience in rail, heavy‑vehicle, or industrial maintenance.
• Strong fault‑finding and diagnostic capability.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and documentation.
• Rail industry experience and operational or control‑room exposure are highly desirable.
• Willingness to obtain or hold rail safety worker competency.
• Excellent situational awareness, decision‑making, and calmness under pressure.
