Media and Communications Manager – Financial Services Council

About the role

The Financial Services Council is seeking a sharp, confident and curious Media and Communications Manager to amplify the voice of New Zealand’s financial services sector. This hands‑on role involves spotting stories, writing compelling copy, managing media relations and translating complex financial topics into clear, human‑focused communication.

Key responsibilities

• Find and shape stories that raise FSC’s profile across media, members and the wider sector.
• Pitch confidently to business, finance, political and consumer journalists and handle media queries with good judgement.
• Turn FSC research, sector data and policy issues into sharp headlines, clear commentary and useful member content.
• Write media releases, op‑eds, EDMs, speeches and talking‑point notes that sound human.
• Support the CEO and senior leaders in delivering the right message to media, members and stakeholders.
• Collaborate with policy, research, events and membership teams to ensure joined‑up, timely communications.
• Track coverage, sentiment and message pull‑through, using insights to continuously improve FSC’s presence.

Required profile

• Strong nose for news and confidence to pick up the phone.
• Excellent writing ability to make complex issues simple, accurate and engaging.
• Good business‑media instincts and established (or growing) journalist networks.
• Comfort working with numbers, spreadsheets, research and financial information to uncover stories.
• Calm judgement under pressure and ability to draft quickly when issues move fast.
• Confidence advising senior leaders and challenging weak messages.
• Experience in financial services, insurance, KiwiSaver, investment, public policy, regulation or a member organisation is a strong advantage.
