Mechanical Fitter

About the role

Napier City Council is seeking a Mechanical Fitter to maintain and improve the mechanical assets that support water, wastewater and stormwater services. This hands‑on position involves working across treatment plants, pump stations and other facilities to ensure reliable and safe operation.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out planned, preventative and reactive maintenance on pumps, valves, hydraulic systems and other mechanical equipment.
• Diagnose faults, repair, overhaul and commission mechanical assets.
• Support capital works through installation, fabrication, testing and commissioning of mechanical plant and pipework.
• Identify reliability issues and recommend repair or replacement solutions.
• Collaborate with contractors, suppliers and internal teams to deliver safe, high‑quality outcomes.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and contribute to continuous improvement and safety culture.

Required profile

• Trade‑qualified Mechanical Fitter (or equivalent in Engineering Maintenance).
• Experience maintaining pumps, valves, hydraulic systems and mechanical plant in an industrial environment.
• Strong fault‑finding, diagnostic, welding and fabrication abilities.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
• Commitment to health and safety, quality workmanship and continuous improvement.
• Excellent organisational and communication skills with a proactive, solutions‑focused approach.
