Māori Communications Advisor (Kāipāho)

About the role

The Salvation Army is seeking a Māori Communications Advisor (Kāipāho) to bring deep cultural insight and communications expertise to its Strategic Communications & Engagement team. In this advisory and delivery role you will help the organisation connect authentically with Māori audiences and honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi through culturally appropriate communication.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice on engaging Māori audiences across campaigns and communications.
  • Ensure Te Ao Māori perspectives are authentically reflected in all work.
  • Develop and deliver communications strategies and content for digital and print channels.
  • Support media engagement, including drafting releases and identifying opportunities.
  • Partner with internal teams and leaders, including Te Tai Hono, to embed best practice in Māori communications.
  • Champion culturally appropriate communication across the organisation.

Required profile

  • Strong understanding of Te Ao Māori, tikanga and Māori communications approaches.
  • Ability to speak conversational Te Reo Māori.
  • Experience in communications strategy, storytelling and content creation.
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to translate complex ideas into plain language.
  • Confidence advising internal stakeholders and influencing best practice.
  • Knowledge of iwi, hapū and Māori leadership landscapes.

Required skills

  • Conversational proficiency in Te Reo Māori.
