About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) is seeking an experienced criminal litigator to lead a small team of lawyers at its North Shore office in Albany. This permanent position offers the chance to manage a diverse caseload while mentoring junior counsel and contributing to high‑profile criminal defence work.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality defence representation to legally aided clients across a range of criminal matters.
• Appear in the High Court and Court of Appeals as required.
• Manage, mentor and supervise junior lawyers, fostering their professional development.
• Handle a varied and often high‑profile caseload, ensuring diligent case preparation and advocacy.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with a PAL2 level listing and the right to practice law in New Zealand.
• Demonstrated credibility with judges, peers and the wider legal community.
• Strong collaborative mindset and ability to support a team environment.
• Empathy and the capacity to relate to a wide range of clients and colleagues.
