Legal & Research Counsel

About the role
This fixed‑term role supports New Zealand’s Coroners and the Coroners Court by providing high‑quality legal research and drafting services. You will work closely with senior judicial staff, helping to produce findings, recommendations and legal advice that contribute to a safer society.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare initial drafts of Coroners’ findings under the direction of the Coroners and team manager.
- Conduct legal research for the Chief Coroner or individual Coroners.
- Appear in the Coroners Court as counsel or junior counsel, where a practising certificate is required.
- Assist in the analysis of legislation, coronial law and medical law.
- Provide research support for inquests and other judicial matters as needed.
Required profile
- Bachelor of Laws degree (mandatory).
- Ability to obtain a practising certificate.
- 1‑2+ years post‑qualification experience.
- Excellent interpersonal, time‑management and resilience when dealing with sensitive material.
- Understanding of Te Ao Māori, Te Reo Māori and associated tikanga.
