Legal Counsel (Part‑Time, Fixed‑Term)

About the role

Northpower is seeking an experienced Legal Counsel on a 12‑month fixed‑term, part‑time basis (24–30 hours per week). The role is hybrid, allowing a mix of remote and on‑site work, and is intended to cover maternity leave starting in August.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice across electricity, fibre networks, energy services, and corporate entities.
• Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements.
• Support regulatory, compliance, environmental and planning matters.
• Advise on property agreements, including leases and network‑related arrangements.
• Manage disputes and coordinate with external counsel as needed.
• Assist with governance activities, including Board documentation.
• Contribute to Northpower’s compliance framework, policies and procedures.
• Deliver practical training and guidance to internal stakeholders.
• Support insurance claims and policy matters.

Required profile

• Law degree and a current NZLS practising certificate (or eligibility).
• 5+ years post‑admission experience, preferably in commercial, regulatory or infrastructure law.
• Strong drafting, negotiation and communication abilities.
• Proven capability to build relationships across all business levels.
• Sound knowledge of environmental and planning law is highly regarded.
• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
• In‑house experience is beneficial but not essential.
